End of 2021-22 Indoor Season

21st May 2022

The 2021-22 indoor volleyball season has come to an end, culminating in the SW Championships.

Having had to finish the 2019-20 season early and abandoning the 2020-21 season entirely due to COVID-19, this season was the first full season after a two year gap. While the club generally has seen a very healthy interest in volleyball post lockdown from new beginners, especially juniors, its teams have seen a number of squad players move on or retire.  Having said all that the club’s women’s team managed to finish 6th while the club’s men’s team finished 6th in the SWVA Regional league.

During the year new and junior players were introduced and developed at the team training sessions with some of those players making appearances in the club's regional teams before the end of the season. This bodes well for the teams to develop further in the coming seasons.

Also in a first for the club, YVC players scooped both men's and women's Most Valuable Player awards for the SW league.

The club's local league team (first created as a mixed team for the 2019/20 season) entered a men's team into division 2 reflecting the fact that the club had lost a number of squad players and the pool of players remaining and wanting to play. During the season the team had to be bolstered by SW squad players at times when numbers were short and to cover injuries and due to hall booking clashes, not all fixtures were played.  The team finished 5th overall and hopefully will keep a core of players to continue to improve next season.

The traditional end to the indoor season in the area is the South West Championships and this year marked its 50th edition. The competition includes entries from the regions National League teams with a high level of volleyball on display.

In a change from normal, the competition was hosted in a new venue: Plymouth Marjon University  on the 14th/15th May. This is a newer venue with better facilities, however, the single sports hall can only accommodate 3 volleyball courts so entries were limited to a total of 10 teams in each competition (womens and mens) with both Yeovil teams finishing 8th.
