The 2023-24 indoor volleyball season has come to an end for the club's four league teams: SW Women & SW Men who compete in the SWVA regional league and local league Men & mixed teams who both compete in Division 2 of the BDVA local league. A brief round up of how they got on is provided below.
This season the women's SW league was split into 2 divisions of six teams each due there being two extra teams entering the league. As out team finished in the top half of the divisional table last season (just!) we were placed in top Premier division. The team had a strong start to the season and were top of the table but then that could not help but be disrupted when one of the squad had to stop their season early and focus on bringing a new baby into the world! While the remaining squad carried on they were eventually edged out of the top spot by Torexe with equal points but worse sets difference. One of the squad, Jenny Manarang, narrowly missed out on the division's Most Valuable Player (MVP) by one vote, breaking a run on YVC players winning the MVP for the last two years.
The men's team improved on the previous season's result by finishing 10th, narrowly missing out on 9th spot due to sets difference.
James Bibby won this season's MVP competition for a 2nd time, improving on last season's runners up position and with one of the younger squad players, Ander Brinck, finishing as the next highest Yeovil player the future continues to look bright.
The team finished 5th out of nine teams maintaining their improved mid-table finish from last season. Now in their fouth season, the team's squad continued to grow, develop and got stronger with new members of the club strengthening the squad.
The club was really pleased to have restarted it's Yeovolley Mixed team again and enter it into the BDVA Mixed Divsion 2 this season, having not entered a mixed team since before the COVID-19 lock downs. This team allows the club's members that are new to the sport, both junior and adult, to experience some competitive (but still fun!) competitive volleyball and is a great learning environment for them all.
Following the usual churn of junior members the club was only able to enter a single junior team into competions this season. This was a contiunation of the club's u18 boys team from the previous season in the national Volleyball England Grand Prix series. This year this incorporated some of the previous season's girls squad.
They took part in four rounds of the Tier 2 competition and during which they played the following teams:
Taunton VC
Weymouth VC
Royal Wootton Bassett VC
South Bucks VC
New Forest VC
The Yeovil VC team won one of the rounds and finished second in the other three rounds behind Weymouth who, despite some very close matches, they were unable to beat during the season.
I the final standings at the end of the season, Weymouth finished top and were promoted to Tier 1 next season and Yeovil finished 2nd in the runners up spot.
